Background of the Study
Public service delivery is a cornerstone of political legitimacy at the local government level. In Isokan, the efficiency, responsiveness, and transparency of public services significantly influence citizens’ trust in elected officials and administrative bodies (Adebayo, 2023). Recent developments suggest that a robust service delivery system can enhance legitimacy by demonstrating government accountability and reinforcing democratic principles (Balogun, 2024). However, challenges such as bureaucratic delays, resource constraints, and corruption undermine these efforts, thereby eroding public confidence. The dynamic interplay between service delivery and political legitimacy necessitates a comprehensive evaluation of how service performance reflects on political authority. Furthermore, local government responsiveness during crises and everyday governance shapes community perceptions of fairness and equity (Chinwe, 2025). This study aims to explore these linkages, considering historical trends, socioeconomic variables, and administrative practices in Isokan. By critically analyzing the current state of public service delivery, the research intends to highlight the implications for political legitimacy, ultimately contributing to policy debates and democratic reforms at the local level.
Statement of the Problem
In Isokan, inefficiencies in public service delivery have raised concerns about the political legitimacy of local government institutions. The existing administrative shortcomings, including slow response times and mismanagement of resources, have led to widespread public dissatisfaction. These issues undermine trust in elected officials and the effectiveness of governance. Despite reform efforts, challenges persist, necessitating an investigation into how poor service delivery directly impacts political legitimacy. Addressing this gap is crucial for developing strategies that restore citizen confidence and promote accountable governance (Adebayo, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the relationship between public service delivery and political legitimacy in Isokan.
  2. To identify administrative factors that hinder effective service provision.
  3. To recommend reforms aimed at enhancing government credibility and accountability.

Research Questions:

  1. How does public service delivery affect political legitimacy in Isokan?
  2. What administrative challenges contribute to inefficiencies in service delivery?
  3. What reforms can improve public service quality and reinforce political legitimacy?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Improved public service delivery enhances political legitimacy.
  2. Administrative inefficiencies negatively impact citizens’ trust in local government.
  3. Implementing targeted reforms can significantly boost political legitimacy.

Significance of the Study
This study underscores the critical link between effective public service delivery and political legitimacy, offering insights that are essential for policy formulation. The research aids local governments in Isokan to identify key challenges and develop strategies to regain public trust and accountability. Its implications are significant for academic, policy, and community stakeholders aiming to enhance democratic governance (Balogun, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to Isokan Local Government Area, focusing on the connection between public service delivery and political legitimacy. It does not address issues beyond administrative performance.
Definitions of Terms:

  • Political Legitimacy: The recognized right to govern based on performance and public trust.
  • Public Service Delivery: The distribution of government-provided services to the community.
